PET CT Scan in
Delhi NCR
The most common scan used in oncology to detect metabolically active cancer cells — combining PET metabolic imaging with CT anatomy in a single whole-body scan. Expert reporting, same-day results.
Seeing Cancer Activity at the Cellular Level
A PET CT (Positron Emission Tomography – Computed Tomography) is the most common scan used in oncology to detect metabolically active cancer cells. Unlike a CT or MRI — which show organ structure — a PET CT shows how your cells are functioning metabolically. Cancer cells consume far more glucose than healthy cells, and the PET scan maps this abnormal activity across your entire body in one session.
A small amount of FDG (fluorodeoxyglucose), a radioactive tracer, is injected into your bloodstream. The scanner detects where it concentrates — producing a 3D map of disease activity. Combined with CT, your doctor gets both the location and metabolic behaviour of any suspicious tissue.
This makes PET CT invaluable for cancer staging, monitoring treatment response, and detecting recurrence — situations where knowing how active the disease is can completely change the treatment plan.
PET CT vs CT vs MRI — Key Differences
-
Whole-body scan in one visitHead to thigh in a single 20–30 minute scan — no multiple appointments needed.
-
Detects disease before it's structurally visibleIdentifies metabolically active lesions too small for CT to reliably detect.
-
Changes treatment decisionsPET CT alters the treatment plan in 30–40% of cancer patients undergoing staging.
-
Monitors treatment responseAfter chemo or radiation, PET CT shows whether treatment is working — weeks before CT would show change.
All PET Tracers Available at Adhiraj Imaging
Different cancers require different radioactive tracers. We offer all major PET CT scan types at our Dilshad Garden centre.
18F-FDG Whole Body PET CT
The standard PET tracer used in oncology worldwide. Detects metabolically active cancer cells throughout the body in a single scan — the first-line investigation for most solid tumours and lymphomas.
PSMA PET CT
Targets the PSMA protein overexpressed on prostate cancer cells. Detects recurrence even when PSA is as low as 0.2 ng/mL — far earlier than conventional CT or bone scan.
DOTA PET CT (DOTATATE)
Targets somatostatin receptors on neuroendocrine tumours. Superior sensitivity to the older Octreotide scan. Also used for PRRT (Peptide Receptor Radionuclide Therapy) planning.
DOTANOC PET CT
Binds to somatostatin receptor subtypes 2, 3, and 5 — a broader profile than DOTATATE. Particularly useful when wider receptor coverage improves sensitivity in certain NET subtypes.
Choline PET CT
Choline is incorporated into rapidly dividing tumour cell membranes. Especially useful in prostate cancer and brain tumours where FDG performance is limited by the brain's normally high glucose activity.
NaF PET CT
Sodium Fluoride PET CT has very high sensitivity for bone metastases — significantly better than conventional bone scintigraphy. Used when bone scan results are equivocal or highly accurate bone staging is needed.
Cardiac Viability PET CT
Assesses myocardial perfusion and viability in patients with coronary artery disease. Identifies hibernating heart muscle that can recover after revascularisation — superior to SPECT imaging.
Brain FDG PET CT
Maps regional brain glucose metabolism to differentiate Alzheimer's from other dementias, localise epileptic foci before surgery, and detect tumour recurrence versus radiation necrosis.
FDG PET CT for Thyroid
For differentiated thyroid cancer patients with rising thyroglobulin but a negative radioiodine scan — FDG PET CT detects dedifferentiated metastatic disease that has lost iodine uptake.

Your oncologist or physician may refer you for a PET CT in several clinical scenarios. Here are the most common reasons.
Initial Cancer Staging
Determines how far a newly diagnosed cancer has spread to lymph nodes or distant organs before treatment planning begins.
Treatment Response
After 2–4 chemotherapy cycles or mid-radiation, PET CT shows whether treatment is actually reducing tumour metabolic activity.
Recurrence Detection
Rising tumour markers after treatment? PET CT locates the site of recurrence when conventional imaging is still negative.
Unknown Primary Cancer
When a biopsy confirms cancer but the origin is unknown, whole-body FDG PET CT finds the primary site in most cases.
Lymphoma Staging
Gold standard for Hodgkin and Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma — used for initial staging, interim assessment, and end-of-treatment evaluation.
Dementia & Alzheimer's
Brain PET CT differentiates Alzheimer's from other dementias — critical for early and accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
How to Prepare for Your PET CT Scan
Correct preparation is essential for an accurate scan. Our team will also send you a personalised prep guide when you book.
Fast for 4–6 Hours
Do not eat or drink anything except plain water for at least 4–6 hours before your FDG PET CT. Food raises blood sugar, which competes with the FDG tracer and reduces scan accuracy.
⚠ Diabetic patients — special protocol applies, please inform us when bookingAvoid Exercise for 24 Hours
Do not exercise or do strenuous activity for 24 hours before the scan. Muscle activity increases glucose uptake and can create misleading findings.
Allow 2–2.5 Hours at the Centre
After tracer injection you rest quietly for 45–60 minutes (uptake period). The scan itself takes 20–30 minutes. Plan your schedule accordingly.
Bring Your Doctor's Prescription
A valid prescription from your oncologist or treating physician is mandatory. Bring all previous scan reports — CT, MRI, earlier PET CT — if available.
Post-Scan Instructions
Drink plenty of water after the scan to flush out the tracer. Avoid close contact with pregnant women and young children for 6–12 hours after the scan.
