Preparing for a CT scan: what to confirm before your visit

Start with the exact examination written on your prescription. A plain CT, a contrast-enhanced CT and CT angiography can have different preparation requirements. Before travelling to Adhiraj Imaging in Dilshad Garden, confirm the scan name, body area and appointment with the team.

Will the scan use contrast?

Contrast helps certain organs, tissues or blood vessels stand out on images. Depending on the examination, it may be given through a vein or by mouth. Not every CT examination uses it. Ask the team which protocol has been requested and what screening is needed. RadiologyInfo: contrast materials.

Confirm food, drink and medicine instructions

Preparation varies with the examination. Ask whether fasting applies, when it starts and whether water is allowed. Tell the team which medicines you take and ask for instructions specific to you, especially if you have diabetes. Do not change medicines or copy another patient's fasting plan based on this article. Share your medical history before the appointment

Tell the team about previous contrast reactions, allergies, kidney disease, diabetes, asthma, recent illnesses and any possibility of pregnancy. For intravenous iodinated contrast, kidney screening may be needed. Ask whether a recent kidney-function report is required and which result the team needs. Bring any requested report rather than assuming an old result will be sufficient. CT preparation guidance.

Bring a simple appointment checklist

  • Your prescription with the exact study name.
  • Previous relevant scan reports and images.
  • Your medicine list and any blood-test results the team requested.
  • Your confirmed preparation instructions and appointment details.

Ask how long to allow for the whole visit, how the report will be delivered and when your referring clinician should review it. The scan itself and the full appointment are different parts of the visit.

Check the complete quotation

Ask whether your quotation includes contrast, the prescribed scan coverage and any additional examinations or blood tests. Confirm the price for your own prescription before travelling. See our CT scan service page for service information.

If your prescription says CT angiography

Use the exact name when contacting the centre. Adhiraj Imaging's CT angiography service covers non-cardiac studies. Cardiac and coronary CT angiography are not available at this centre.
