When might a specialist request fetal MRI?

A specialist may use fetal MRI to clarify certain findings involving the developing brain, spine, chest or abdomen after ultrasound. The clinical question, gestational age and whether MRI is appropriate should be decided with the treating specialist. The scan cannot diagnose every condition or replace clinical advice.

What to bring and ask before booking

  • Bring the referral, pregnancy details and relevant ultrasound reports or images.
  • Tell the team about any implant, pacemaker, surgery or metal fragment before entering the MRI area.
  • Ask the team to confirm the examination protocol, whether any preparation is needed, the available slot and the expected report time.
  • Discuss any concerns about MRI during pregnancy with your obstetrician or radiologist. MRI does not use ionising radiation, but suitability is assessed for each patient.

Is fetal MRI the same as an ultrasound?
No. The two methods provide different information. Fetal MRI is usually considered for a specific question after ultrasound, on the advice of the treating specialist.
When in pregnancy is fetal MRI performed?
Timing depends on the clinical question and specialist referral. Please share the gestational age and earlier ultrasound report so the team can confirm the appropriate appointment.
How long will it take and when will the report be ready?
Scan and reporting times vary with the protocol and findings. The team will give a study-specific estimate when booking; do not rely on a standard turnaround for every fetal MRI.
Does fetal MRI use radiation?
MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves rather than ionising radiation. Your obstetrician and imaging team should still assess whether the examination is appropriate for your pregnancy.
