What does FDG PET CT show?
FDG PET uses a radioactive tracer related to glucose to show metabolic activity. CT provides anatomical detail. Doctors use the combined examination for selected cancer assessments, including staging and treatment response. Increased tracer uptake can also occur with inflammation or infection; a scan finding alone is not a cancer diagnosis.
Preparation and diabetes
Preparation depends on the protocol. Ask the centre for fasting and water instructions before attending. Tell the team about diabetes and medicines so it can provide individual scheduling guidance. Do not change insulin or other medicines on the basis of a general webpage. Report pregnancy or breastfeeding before the scan.
Allow time for the whole appointment
The visit includes preparation, tracer injection, an uptake period and imaging. Confirm your arrival time and expected visit duration when booking. Your team will provide any instructions for after the scan.
