Which part of the spine is being examined?
Cervical MRI examines the neck; dorsal or thoracic MRI covers the middle back; lumbar or lumbosacral MRI covers the lower back. MRI can help evaluate spinal discs, nerves and the spinal cord when a clinician considers imaging appropriate. The correct region depends on the clinical question.
Contrast and previous surgery
Contrast is not necessary for every spine MRI. It may be requested for particular conditions or after surgery. Tell the team about spinal operations, metal implants, pregnancy and kidney problems. Bring an implant card or operation details if available.
Preparing for the examination
You need to remain still during imaging. Tell the centre about severe pain or difficulty lying flat before booking so it can discuss the examination with you. Follow the specific food, drink and medication instructions supplied for your study.
Understanding the quotation
Ask whether your prescription covers one region, multiple regions, contrast, or an additional screening sequence. A whole-spine screening sequence is not automatically equivalent to a complete detailed examination of each region. Confirm the scope and full amount before paying.
Should everyone with back pain have an MRI?
No. The treating clinician decides whether imaging is appropriate after considering symptoms, examination findings and medical history.
What should I bring from my hospital?
Bring your prescription, relevant earlier scans and reports, and available surgery or implant details. Ask our team about appointment availability before travelling.
