MRI, CT and PET CT: different tests for different questions
No single scan is the best choice for every condition. Your treating clinician selects imaging according to the clinical question, previous findings and your individual circumstances.
How the examinations differ
CT
Uses X-rays to create cross-sectional images. The requested body region and use of contrast vary. Cardiac CT angiography is not available here.
PET CT
Combines PET information from an administered tracer with CT images. GE Discovery PET CT with FDG, PSMA and DOTA study enquiries is available; confirm the exact prescribed tracer.
What the report means
The findings need to be considered with symptoms, examination and other tests. A normal or abnormal scan alone does not answer every clinical question.

- What question is the scan intended to answer?
- Which body area and protocol are written on the prescription?
- Is contrast or a particular PET tracer required?
- What preparation and safety screening apply to me?
- What is the total price and expected report time?
Safety and preparation
Tell the team about pregnancy or breastfeeding, implants, diabetes, kidney disease and previous contrast reactions. Instructions differ between examinations. Do not copy another patient’s fasting or medicine plan.
For most non-PET scans, reports are typically available in about four hours, subject to the study and any additional review. PET CT has a separate reporting time. Confirm your own appointment and report plan.
