What is a brain MRI?
Brain MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves to show brain structures, without X-rays. A doctor may request it to investigate seizures, suspected tumours, certain neurological symptoms or changes on earlier imaging. A symptom alone does not establish that MRI is needed.
Plain MRI or MRI with contrast?
Some examinations use an injected gadolinium contrast agent; others do not. The referring doctor and radiology team decide which protocol answers the clinical question. Tell the team about kidney disease, pregnancy, prior contrast reactions and any implants before your visit.
Before your appointment
Bring the prescription, previous scan images and reports, and implant documentation if relevant. Tell the team if you have difficulty lying still or feel anxious in enclosed spaces. Ask for the preparation instructions for your specific study.
